T-Shirt Size Calculator

What T-shirt size am I? Measure around the fullest part of your chest and choose the size whose shirt chest is the same or a little bigger — on our classic tee, a 38 in chest is a Medium (40 in around). No tape measure? Enter height and weight below for an estimate that matches a real chest measurement about three times in four.

Sizes follow the chest, so a tall, light build can land on a smaller size than a shorter one. Our tees are standard length — if you are over 6′2″ (188 cm), each size up adds about 1 in (2.5 cm) of length. — means larger than our biggest size.

How accurate is a height and weight size calculator?

Close, but not exact. We checked this calculator against ANSUR II, a public body-measurement survey of 6,066 US Army personnel. Height and weight alone picked the same size as a real chest measurement 74% of the time, and were never more than one size off in 99.9% of cases. Counting the second size the calculator names when you sit near a boundary, it covered the right size 89% of the time.

The misses come from things a scale and a ruler cannot see. Two people at 5′10″ and 190 lb can carry that weight as a broad, muscular chest or around the middle, and two people of the same height can have very different torso lengths. That is why the calculator asks for a build — Slim or Broad nudges the estimate by about 1 in — and, from a BMI of 30, also names the next size up for room over the stomach. A tape measure, or better still a shirt that already fits, always beats an estimate.

How to measure for a T-shirt size

There are two different measurements, and mixing them up is the most common sizing mistake. Body chest is measured around you with a soft tape. Pit to pit is measured straight across a shirt lying flat. A shirt that is 20 in pit to pit is 40 in around, and it fits a body chest of up to about 40 in.

Chest

Measure your chest

  1. Wrap a soft tape around the fullest part of the chest, just under the arms.
  2. Keep it level and snug, not tight, and breathe out normally.
  3. Enter it under Your chest. The calculator adds the room for the fit you pick.
Pit to pitLength

Measure a shirt that fits Most accurate

  1. Lay a tee that fits the way you like flat on a table and smooth it out.
  2. Measure straight across from armpit seam to armpit seam — “pit to pit”.
  3. Enter it under A shirt that fits. Doubled, it is the shirt’s chest all the way around: 20 in flat is 40 in around.

Between two sizes? Size up

If you land right on the line between two sizes, choose the bigger one. Finished shirts normally vary by up to about 1 in from the size chart, and cotton can shrink a little in a hot dryer — see how much cotton shrinks and how to wash graphic tees to keep a good fit. Size down only if you want a closer, fitted look.

Why a Large is not the same in every brand

Size letters are not standardized. Our classic tee is a straight, roomy cut; retail “fitted” tees taper at the waist, and many Asian brands run a size or more smaller than US sizes. Compare chest measurements, not letters — the size chart under the calculator shows both the shirt and the chest each size is made for.

Buying a T-shirt as a gift?

Height and weight are much easier to find out than a chest measurement, which is why this calculator starts there. If you can borrow a T-shirt the person likes, measure it pit to pit instead — it is the most accurate way to size someone else. Frequently asked questions

What size shirt am I based on height and weight?

Use the calculator above, or the height and weight table below it. As a rough guide for our unisex tee, a man who is 5′10″ and 170 lb is usually a Medium, at 200 lb a Large, and at 230 lb an XL; build and preferred fit can move that by one size.

What does pit to pit mean?

Pit to pit is the width of a shirt laid flat, measured straight across from one armpit seam to the other. Double it to get the shirt’s chest all the way around. It is the most reliable way to compare two shirts, because the room you like is already in the shirt you measure.

Should women size down in a unisex shirt?

Not automatically. Our women’s M measures 38.5 in (98 cm) around the chest — between a unisex S at 36 in (91 cm) and a unisex M at 40 in (102 cm) — so the right unisex size depends on the person, not a rule of thumb. Pick “Female” and switch the style between Unisex and Women’s to compare both in one click.

Does the calculator work for hoodies and sweatshirts?

Yes. Choose the style and the result uses that garment’s own chart. Hoodies and sweatshirts are cut roomier for layering, and the calculator allows for that, so most people land on the same size they wear in our tees.

Are these US sizes?

Yes. All sizes on this page are US sizes. If you usually buy UK, European or Asian sizes, compare your chest measurement with the chart rather than the size letter.
