Estimates consider chest and waist, so a tall, light build can land on a smaller size than a shorter one. Our tees are standard length — if you are over 6′2″ (188 cm), each size up adds about 1 in (2.5 cm) of length. — means larger than our biggest size.

How to measure for a T-shirt size
There are two different measurements, and mixing them up is the most common sizing mistake. Body chest is measured around you with a soft tape. Pit to pit is measured straight across a shirt lying flat. A shirt that is 20 in pit to pit is 40 in around. That is a garment measurement, not a guarantee that it will fit a 40 in body chest; the room you prefer and the garment’s shape matter.
Measure your chest
- Wrap a soft tape around the fullest part of the chest, just under the arms.
- Keep it level and snug, not tight, and breathe out normally.
- Choose Body chest and enter the circumference. The fit setting adjusts the size estimate; compare garment measurements before ordering.
Measure a shirt that fits Compare measurements
- Lay a garment that fits the way you like flat on a table and smooth it out.
- Measure straight across from armpit seam to armpit seam — “pit to pit”.
- Enter it under A shirt that fits. Doubled, it is the shirt’s chest all the way around: 20 in flat is 40 in around.
Between two sizes?
Compare the garment width and length. Choose more room for a looser fit, or a closer match to a shirt you already like. Measurements can vary, and washing can affect fit. See how much cotton shrinks and how to wash graphic tees for care advice.
Why a Large is not the same in every brand
Size letters are not standardized. Our classic tee is a straight, roomy cut; retail “fitted” tees taper at the waist, and many Asian brands run a size or more smaller than US sizes. Compare chest measurements, not letters — the size chart under the calculator shows finished garment width and length. For a garment comparison, use a shirt of the same type and measure it flat.
Buying a T-shirt as a gift?
Height and weight are much easier to find out than a chest measurement, which is why this calculator starts there. If you can borrow a T-shirt the person likes, measure it pit to pit instead — it is the most accurate way to size someone else. For more ways to check a size without spoiling the surprise, see our guide to unisex vs. women’s T-shirt sizes.
How the estimate works and its limits
The height and weight model (October 2, 2026) estimates chest circumference using ANSUR II measurements from 6,066 US Army personnel, and waist circumference using NHANES 2021–2023 adult measurements. The military chest sample does not represent every shopper. Build adjusts the estimate; a higher BMI can prompt a suggestion to compare the next size for more room at the middle.
The calculator then compares those estimates with our garment charts using its fit settings. Body chest mode uses the chest measurement and preferred fit only, with no estimated waist. Shirt mode compares actual flat widths; optional length is shown for comparison and does not change the recommendation.
These are sizing rules, not a validated guarantee of real-world fit. Earlier percentage comparisons measured agreement between two versions of the calculation, not customer fit or return rates. We do not present those percentages as accuracy for this version. Shoulders, waist, stretch, torso length, washing and personal preference can change the fit. This tool covers the adult US styles listed, not every brand, children’s clothing or all-over-print garments.
Frequently asked questions
What size shirt am I based on height and weight?
Use the calculator above, or the height and weight table below it. As a rough guide for our unisex tee, a man who is 5′10″ and 170 lb is usually a Medium, at 200 lb a Large, and at 230 lb an XL; build and preferred fit can move that by one size.
What does pit to pit mean?
Pit to pit is the width of a shirt laid flat, measured straight across from one armpit seam to the other. Double it to get the shirt’s chest all the way around. It is the most reliable way to compare two shirts, because the room you like is already in the shirt you measure.
Should women size down in a unisex shirt?
Not automatically. Our women’s M measures 38.5 in (98 cm) around the chest — between a unisex S at 36 in (91 cm) and a unisex M at 40 in (102 cm) — so the right unisex size depends on the person, not a rule of thumb. Switch the style between Unisex and Women’s and compare the listed garment measurements. For a height and weight estimate, also select Female.
Does the calculator work for hoodies and sweatshirts?
Yes. Choose the style and the result uses that garment’s own chart. In body modes, the estimate allows for their roomier cut for layering. In “A shirt that fits” mode, it compares actual flat widths directly. A 22 in flat width matches our hoodie M. Compare a hoodie with a hoodie when you want similar layering room.
Are these US sizes?
Yes. All sizes on this page are US sizes. If you usually buy UK, European or Asian sizes, compare a garment you like with the flat width and length chart rather than relying on the size letter.
